Health and Wellbeing

United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) articles supported by our Health and Wellbeing curriculum:

Health and Wellbeing: Learning in health and wellbeing includes mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing; planning for choices and change; physical education, physical activity and sport; food and health; substance misuse; relationships, sexual health and parenthood.

To embrace the challenges of creating a happy and successful life, pupils need knowledge that will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships. Pupils can also put this knowledge into practice as they develop the capacity to make sound decisions when facing risks, challenges and complex contexts. Everyone faces difficult situations in their lives. These subjects can support young people to develop resilience, to know how and when to ask for help, and to know where to access support.

High quality, evidence-based and age-appropriate teaching of these subjects can help prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. They can also enable us to promote the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, at school and in society.

Learning through health and wellbeing enables children and young people to:

  • make informed decisions in order to improve their mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing
  • experience challenge and enjoyment
  • experience positive aspects of healthy living and activity for themselves
  • apply their mental, emotional, social and physical skills to pursue a healthy lifestyle
  • make a successful move to the next stage of education or work
  • establish a pattern of health and wellbeing that will be sustained into adult life, and which will help to promote the health and wellbeing of the next generation of Scottish children.

Health and Wellbeing permeates the whole curriculum. Children gain experience and knowledge of the important role of exercise within our Health and Wellbeing programme. This includes Active Health, gymnastics, dance, sports and games. Children enjoy two hours of Physical Education a week as well as additional extra-curricular opportunities and  opportunities to attend sporting festivals/competitions organised by our Active Schools Coordinator, Tracey McBride.
